Piers Morgan shares message to supporters as Meghan files second formal complaint

Piers Morgan says he lost his hosting role on Good Morning Britain because he "chose not to apologise" for comments he made about Meghan Markle.

The broadcaster shared a handwritten "note of thanks" to his supporters on Instagram days after network ITV confirmed he would no longer anchor the morning program.

"Those of you that know me well enough know that, despite my many faults, I'm always willing to stand my ground for the things that I think matter most," he wrote.

"My fervent opposition to the Iraq War led to my demise from the Daily Mirror. My outspoken views on the insanity of American gun laws led to the end of my time at CNN."

Morgan suggested the fallout from his comments about the Duchess of Sussex and claims she made in her Oprah interview, was the latest example of this.

"I thus became the latest 'victim' of the cancel culture that is permeating our country, every minute, of every hour, of everyday," he continued.

"Though of course, I consider myself to be neither a victim, nor actually cancelled.

"However, I do believe the defence of free speech and the right to express honestly held opinions, is the most important issue of my career, and the most important issue in British society."

Morgan urged his supporters to buy his book Wake Up, telling them, "As I said when I left GMB, the right to free speech is a hill worth dying on."

It seems his call to action has worked; on Twitter, the media personality has since claimed the book moved up to number four on the Amazon book charts.

Hours after Morgan shared his update on Instagram, UK media regulator Ofcom confirmed it had received a complaint on behalf of Meghan about his on-air comments during Monday's episode of Good Morning Britain.

This is the duchess' second formal complaint regarding the segment — particularly Morgan's suggestion Meghan was not being truthful about having suicidal thoughts.

Earlier in the week, the former actress raised her concerns with ITV about the impact Morgan's comments could have on others and how it could degrade the seriousness of mental health issues.

Morgan responded to the news of Meghan and Harry's Ofcom complaint on Twitter.

"Where do I get to complain about all the shameful lies/smears in their interview & the terrible damage they've done to the Queen's mental health as her 99-yr-old husband spends his fourth week in hospital?" he wrote.

The media regulator received more than 41,000 complaints about Morgan's comments on Monday's show, and launched an investigation under its "harm and offence rules".
