Michelle Obama's advice for Duchess of Sussex

Former US First Lady Michelle Obama has shared some advice for Meghan Markle as a new royal.

Obama, 54, was speaking to Good Housekeeping magazine when the topic of the Duchess of Sussex came up.

The author and mother-of-two advised the Duchess to "take some time" finding her feet.

"Like me, Meghan probably never dreamt that she’d have a life like this, and the pressure you feel -- from yourself and from others -- can sometimes feel like a lot," she says.

"So, my biggest piece of advice would be to take some time and don’t be in a hurry to do anything.

"I spent the first few months in the White House mainly worrying about my daughters, making sure they were off to a good start at school and making new friends before I launched into any more ambitious work. I think it’s okay -- it’s good, even -- to do that."

The former first lady also talked about the importance of the Duchess choosing something she felt passionate about.

"What I’d say is that there’s so much opportunity to do good with a platform like that -- and I think Meghan can maximise her impact for others, as well her own happiness, if she’s doing something that resonates with her personally," she said.

Markle, 37, has so far chosen to focus on mental health, women’s rights, and a community cookbook to benefit victims of the Grenfell Tower Fire in September.

Both Obama and Markle both share a special interest in women and girls and equality.
