Meghan Markle's friend facing 20 years in jail

One of Meghan Markle's friends is facing up to 20 years inside a Saudi Arabian prison, accused of conspiring with the country's enemies.

Women's rights activist Loujain Al-Hathloul was detained in May along with 10 others - most of them females.

Amnesty International says authorities in Riyadh claim the prisoners confessed to communicating with Saudi Arabia’s enemies and "providing financial and moral support to hostile elements abroad".

They now face charges which amount to treason, carrying a penalty of 20 years behind bars or even death.

Loujain is well known in Saudi Arabia - she'd been fighting for the right for women to drive and was one of the first women to stand for elected office in 2015.

Just two years ago the 28-year-old took part in the One Young World summit in Canada, alongside Meghan.

Meghan and Loujain were photographed together for a piece by Vanity Fair.

Other notable guests included Emma Watson, Cher and Justin Trudeau.

Markle wrote a blog post about her experience at the summit, saying, "When I was asked to be a Counsellor at One Young World, my response was a resounding 'yes'.

"One Young World invites young adults from all over the world who are actively working to transform the socio-political landscape by being the greater good.

"They are delegates who are speaking out against human rights violations, environmental crises, gender equality issues, discrimination and injustice. They are the change."

Loujain was first detained in March by police in Abu Dhabi, who pulled her over while she was driving near her university.

She was sent back to Saudi Arabia and banned from leaving the country, and using social media.

Kareem Chehayeb, from Amnesty International, says the group would now be brought before the Specialised Criminal Court to face charges.

"They have been arrested purely based on their women’s rights activism and these are trumped up charges for which they could get 20 years in jail," he says.
