Meghan shares rare personal message as Charles and Camilla wrap up Australia tour

The Duchess of Sussex has revealed she still enjoys a "beautiful friendship" with her wedding dress designer six years after she made her show-stopping gown.

The former Meghan Markle chose Clare Waight Keller, of Givenchy, to make her wedding dress. At the time, Waight Keller was artistic director of the French luxury fashion house. She is now creative director of Japanese brand Uniqlo.

The New York Times reported it reached out to Meghan for a comment on a story on the British-born designer, before she responded via email that the two enjoy "a beautiful friendship."

Meghan also revealed she continues to support Waight Keller's career and owns several of the pieces she designed for Uniqlo, including a trench coat and several dresses.

"Her pieces for the brand have movement and modern grace," she wrote.

The duchess previously revealed she wanted a British designer for her wedding dress.

At the time of the wedding, Kensington Palace released a statement saying Meghan chose Waight Keller because of her "timeless and elegant aesthetic, impeccable tailoring, and relaxed demeanour."

The two worked together on the design of the pure white dress, which featured a boat neck and three-quarter length sleeves.

It was made of double-bonded silk cady with an underskirt of triple silk organza to support the bodice and train.

They also collaborated on the five-metre white silk veil that included floral representations of all 53 countries in the Commonwealth. The latter was suggested by the duchess and was said to have been given the seal of approval by King Charles III – who leaves Australia today with Queen Camilla – in the moments after the wedding on May 19, 2018.

The duchess and the designer reportedly became close during the dressmaking process, with the two meeting for fittings eight times in the five months it took to make.

Meghan presented Waight Keller with the British Designer of the Year Award at the British Fashion Awards in London in December 2018.

It prompted Waight Keller to thank the royal for trusting her to design her wedding gown.

During the 2023 Bazaar At Work Summit in London last November, Waight Keller reflected on the way their friendship evolved while making the wedding dress.

"It was just a pleasure to create in this very, very private way," she said.

"It was just the two of us for so long, and it became this very personal girlfriend relationship."

She previously reflected on the process in a 2020 Instagram post.

"Two years ago today I was in the final fittings for a very secret dress," she wrote.

"So many emotions were running through me during those months leading up to the big day."

"A wedding dress is one of the most exquisite and beautiful moments for a designer, but also personally as a woman artist, creator there is a lot of sensitivity that flows through the process from the knowledge and understanding of the feelings that you have as a bride," she continued.

"Learning to let go of my emotions and embrace the feelings of someone you are designing for brings about an incredibly beautiful relationship of trust and intimacy."

And it seems the relationship is standing the test of time. The two were spotted leaving a lunch date at Beverly Hills hotspot Cipriani in February this year.
