As Meghan plans her first visit to Britain in four years, one decision is holding her travel plans in the balance

The Duchess of Sussex may return to Britain for the first time in four years to attend an Invictus Games event this summer.

The Duchess, who was last in the UK in September 2022 for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, is said to be hoping to join the Duke for the event on July 10.

However, whether or not she will come to Britain will depend on the outcome of a security review.

The Duke is seeking an upgrade to his taxpayer-funded security, which he believes is necessary to allow his wife and children to travel to the UK safely.

He hopes to bring the Duchess to the event, which will mark a "one-year countdown" to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham.

Since 2017, the Duke and Duchess have attended the Invictus Games, at which sick and wounded servicemen and woman compete, in Toronto, Sydney, the Hague and Dusseldorf. In 2025, they both appeared at the first winter version of the games in Canada.

A source told the Sun: "Security is always going to be the deciding factor in this."

The Duchess will only attend if Prince Harry is content with the police protection she will be provided, it is understood. He is currently awaiting the outcome of an assessment into his threat level.

In December, having written to the Home Secretary, he was told that the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec) – a Home Office committee – had instructed its risk management board (RMB) to reassess his security needs for the first time in nearly six years.

The assessment will be presented to Ravec, which will then decide whether any changes to his security are necessary.

Last week, it was reported that the Duke was "nailed on" to receive more security. He is currently required to give the Home Office 28 days' notice of his plans to travel to Britain, with taxpayer-funded police protection officers provided for some of his public activities.

No decision has yet been announced.

In May 2025, he told the BBC that it was "impossible" for the Sussex family to return to his birthplace in the current circumstances, saying he could not "see a world in which I would be bringing my wife and children back to the UK at this point".

"I think that it's really quite sad that I won't be able to show my children my homeland," he added.

Prince Archie, now six, was born in Britain but moved to Canada then California with his parents at the end of 2019. Four-year-old Princess Lilibet has been to her father's home once for the late Queen's Platinum Jubilee, during which she celebrated her first birthday at Frogmore Cottage.

Prince Harry is understood to be planning multiple trips to the UK relating to his patronages this year, as well as attending engagements to do with Invictus.

The Royal family will be invited to the 2027 games, and the Prince is reported to want the King to take part in its opening ceremony.

In 2017, the then Meghan Markle made her first official public appearance with Prince Harry at the Toronto Invictus Games, where they were seen walking hand in hand.

In 2024, the couple attended Invictus events in Nigeria, one of the countries which takes part in the tournament, and the Duke travelled to Ukraine with the Invictus Games Foundation in September 2025.
