How Meghan and Harry's outfits were a show of unity during last royal engagements

Just weeks from the day Prince Harry and Meghan Markle officially stepped back as senior royals for a 'financially independent' life away from the monarchy, the couple put on a display of sartorial splendor.

Harry and Meghan conducted a 'farewell tour' of sorts, attending a series of final official engagements culminating in the Commonwealth Day ceremony.

Though they hadn't said much publicly about their departure, the outfits the Duke and Duchess of Sussex chose during those events spoke a thousand words.

At each of their joint appearances, Harry and Meghan incorporated corresponding colours in their outfits — the sartorial version of a united front.

For the service at Westminster Abbey on March 9, 2020, the Duchess wore an emerald green Emilia Wickstead cape dress with a matching hat.

Though the exterior of Harry's suit was blue, a slight breeze as the couple arrived revealed the lining of his jacket was a green that perfectly matched Meghan's outfit.

The couple's matchy-matchy dressing had been far less subtle for their other two appearances.

On March 5, the Sussexes turned heads in shades of blue when they attended the Endeavour Fund Awards.

Meghan wore an electric blue Victoria Beckham pencil dress and navy accessories, which tied in nicely with Harry's royal blue suit and light blue tie.

On March 7, they were at it again, this time in vibrant shades of red for the Mountbatten Music Festival at Royal Albert Hall.

The Duchess chose a striking floor-length cape dress from Safiyaa, teamed with matching scarlet heels, earrings and a clutch.

The ensemble flawlessly coordinated with Harry's red, black and gold Royal Navy uniform.

Sure, perhaps those outfits were simply examples of the Sussexes embracing the art of 'couple dressing', or perhaps even accidental-but-not-really 'twinning'.

But in light of how early 2020 played out, using their wardrobes for a symbolic display of solidarity as they waved goodbye to the monarchy seemed equally likely.
