Meet the latest suspect in the 'who set up Harry and Meghan?' mystery

It's one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in the history of humankind: the identity of the mutual friend who introduced Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

In 2016, the British prince and the American actress were set up on a fateful blind date in London. Three years on, they're happily married with a baby.

Although the Duke and Duchess of Sussex confirmed this was how they met during their first joint interview, they refused to name the matchmaker in question.

Immediately, the royal sleuths of the world dusted off their magnifying glasses and tried their darndest to figure out who it could be.

Plenty of names have been tossed into the ring, and this week there's a new contender: Alexander Gilkes, the boyfriend of tennis star Maria Sharapova.

As The Sun points out, the British businessman is closely linked to both Harry and Meghan.

Gilkes was previously married to fashion designer Misha Nonoo, who is one of the Duchess' closest friends.

The Paddle8 auction house founder is also chummy with princes Harry and William, having been a fellow student of Eton college.

While this seemingly paints Gilkes as a legitimate possibility of being the mutual friend who set up the Sussexes, there's a major flaw in this theory.

You see, although Harry and Meghan didn't name their matchmaker in their post-engagement interview with the BBC, they did firmly indicate it was a woman.

"We should protect her privacy and not reveal too much of that," Meghan said.

Her fiance added, "We'll protect her privacy, yeah, but it was literally — it was through her and then we met once and then twice, back-to-back."

(Then again, perhaps the female pronouns served as a deliberate red herring...)

Fans quickly pointed the finger at the Duchess's pal Nonoo, who became acquainted to Prince Harry through Gilkes during their marriage.

Meghan even wore one of Nonoo's designs when she made her first official public appearance with her future husband at the Toronto Invictus Games.

When probed by a newspaper about her possible role in the royal romance, the designer remained tight-lipped, responding: "I really can't answer that."

Violet von Westenholz, a childhood friend of Harry's who met Meghan during her time on the TV series Suits, has been another popular suspect.

Rumour has it the prince confided to von Westenholtz that he was having trouble meeting potential dates, and she saw an opportunity.

Naturally, the Sussexes have not publicly responded to any of this speculation.

However, the Duchess did recently acknowledge a scene in TV series The Good Place, in which a character boasts she'd set up her "friends" Harry and Meghan.

Jameela Jamil, who plays socialite and serial name-dropper Tahani Al-Jamil, was chosen by Meghan to feature in the issue of British Vogue she guest-edited.

The actress told Grazia the Duchess referenced The Good Place's royal joke in one of their phone conversations.

"She said she's grateful to Tahani for introducing her to Harry. I just replied, 'You're welcome'," Jamil said.
