Harry and Meghan could return to Windsor to have baby Lilibet Diana baptised in front of the Queen

Prince Harry and Meghan could be heading back to the UK for the christening of their daughter, Lilibet Diana.

There are reports the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are keen to have their baby girl baptised at Windsor Castle where Archie had his ceremony in 2019.

Harry and Meghan are said to want the Queen to be among the guests, but the situation could prove a little "awkward" some commentators have suggested.

It would be the first time the duchess has returned to the UK since March, 2020, when she and Harry conducted a farewell tour as they stepped back as senior working royals.

Harry was in London on July 1 for the unveiling of a statue of his mother Diana, Princess of Wales, but Meghan remained in California having given birth to Lili on June 4.

The couple is rumoured to want Lili's christening to follow in the royal tradition that Archie had, including being baptised from the historic Lily Font and wearing the replica of the original christening gown first seen on one of Queen Victoria's children nearly 200 years ago.

But The Mirror's royal editor Russell Myers said Harry and Meghan's return to the UK "will be definitely awkward".

"Meghan isn't flavour of the month with the family," he told Today on Sunday.

"Certainly, the family have always said they will be much-loved members of the family.

"However, we're still talking about the fallout of the Oprah Winfrey interview, Emmy or no Emmy nomination.

"The tensions are still running very, very high within the family, indeed."

Archie's christening took place on July 6, 2019, inside the Queen's private chapel at Windsor Castle, two months after his birth.

If they follow the same time period, Lili could be baptised in early August.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were heavily criticised for keeping many of the details of Archie's christening private, and Lily's baptism could follow the same format.

Just 25 guests were in attendance and the full list, including the names of Archie's godparents, were never made public.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh did not attend as they were staying at Sandringham with prior royal engagements.

Harry and Meghan chose to keep cameras out of the event, releasing just two photos afterwards.
