Lady Amelia Windsor gives fans a closer look at her back tattoo

Tattoos aren't the first image that springs to mind when one thinks of royalty, but there are some royals out there who've dabbled with ink.

Among them is Lady Amelia Windsor, the stylish granddaughter of one of Queen Elizabeth's cousins.

On Wednesday, the fashion model, 25, gave her Instagram followers a rare close-up look at one of her tattoos — a tiger walking across her left shoulder blade.

"Tiger's always got my back," she wrote.

This isn't the only animal-themed design Lady Amelia, who is 39th in the British line of succession, has inked on her body.

She also has a tattoo on her wrist of a trio of bear cubs, the significance of which she explained to Elle magazine in 2018.

"[They] represent my brother, sister and I because we saw three cubs in Canada when we were really little and thought they were us on the beach," she said.

"It was a really magical moment."

Lady Amelia has a second tattoo on the same wrist, along with a pair of wings on her ribcage.

"I'd always like another tattoo, but you should only get a tattoo if you're really sure about it," she told Elle.

When it comes to royals with body art, she's in good company.

Like Lady Amelia, Princess Sofia of Sweden has a back tattoo — a sunburst that sits at the base of her neck.

The design was even visible on the day of the former glamour model and reality TV star's royal wedding to Prince Carl Philip in 2015.

Sofia, who is currently pregnant with her third child, also has letters tattooed on her ankle and a butterfly on her ribcage.

Across the border, Denmark's Crown Prince Frederik has a shark inked on his calf and a second tattoo on his bicep.

Frederik won't be Denmark's first tattooed king; his grandfather King Frederik IX had several tattoos on his torso and arms, including birds and dragons.

Monaco's Princess Stephanie also has tattoos, including dolphins on her ankles, a dragon on her back, and bracelet and ring designs on her wrist and finger.

As for the British monarchy, it's not clear whether any senior royals have been permanently inked — though the Queen's grandfather King George V got dragon and tiger tatts during a visit to Japan as a teenager.

However, the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex have all received henna tattoos, which fade in a matter of weeks, during royal appearances.
