Following the news of King Charles' cancer diagnosis, Prince Harry will return to the UK to be at his father's side.

Per numerous media outlets, the Duke of Sussex has spoken to his father about his recent diagnosis and plans to fly to the UK from the US in the coming days.

Hello magazine reports wife Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, will not join her husband, remaining in California for the couple's children Archie and Lilibet's "schooling".

The magazine also says it's likely Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, will stay with her daughter to help care for the children.

"If he does come, that is a very wise and sensible move to make to come and see his dad," former palace press secretary Dickie Arbiter tells Today.

"Particularly at this time, his dad having come out of hospital last week, Tuesday ... and less than a week later, an announcement to say he has cancer."

The news of the King's cancer diagnosis was announced by Buckingham Palace on Monday (UK time), a statement revealing doctors had discovered the cancer while treating Charles' enlarged prostate last month.

"During The King's recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer," the statement began.

It continued, "His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties.

"Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual."

"The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure.

"He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible."

The statement concluded, "His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer."

"I'm told as well by people close to Harry that the King did call him personally, as he did his siblings and Prince William as well," Myers said.

"Harry is flying over in the coming days and this is obviously on the backdrop of some incredibly fractious times for Harry and the rest of the family.

"So could this be the green shoots of a new relationship? I think it speaks volumes that Harry is coming over straight away to be by his father's side and is certainly an interesting time for Harry and the King and the rest of the family."

It isn't clear how long Prince Harry intends to stay by his father's side during this time, but his last visit to the UK was infamously short.

Despite being close to family in September of last year while attending the WellChild Awards, an annual event that honours sick children, their families, and caregivers, Harry didn't see the royals.

Harry also notoriously left London just hours after the King's coronation last year.
