Kate and William 'anxious' over Prince George's role at King Charles III's coronation

The Prince and Princess of Wales are reportedly "anxious" over the role their eldest child Prince George will plan in the coronation of King Charles III on May 6.

George, nine, is expected to play a key role in the event alongside his father, Prince William, 40, as the next two royals in line to the British throne.

Royal commentator and author Tom Quinn suggests Kate and William are "worried that it will be too much" for their son and are in a "bit of an argument" about whether George should play a more formal role in King Charles' coronation or simply join his siblings, Princess Charlotte, seven, and Prince Louis, four, in whatever capacity they participate.

Writing in the UK's Express, Quinn explained the couple's main concern is how Prince George will be perceived in the eyes of the public following the event and are also feel George is too young to take on more royal duties.

"It's almost an echo of the way William and [Prince] Harry were sometimes made to attend formal occasions that they shouldn't have been made to attend," Quinn said.

This includes Prince William and Prince Harry walking behind their mother Princess Diana's coffin in 1997 following her death in a car crash in Paris.

"A lot of people criticized that and said that it was a horrible thing to make two boys that young, and especially Harry, do," Quinn said.

"There is a debate going on quite fiercely at the moment about how to do that. And, as far as I've heard, it hasn't been decided yet, he added.

The coronation of King Charles III will take place on May 6, with Buckingham Palace in the midst of finalising every last detail of the historic event. The event will be held inside Westminster Abbey, in London.

The coronation will see His Majesty King Charles III crowned alongside Camilla, the Queen Consort.

In a statement Buckingham Palace said: "The coronation will reflect the monarch's role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry."

Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis look set to be involved in their grandfather's big day, following behind him in a carriage soon after he is officially crowned King.

According to a report from The Times, which claims the publication has seen a rehearsal document, the three Wales children "are expected to join their parents" and be on "public display" in a horse-drawn carriage as it leaves Westminster Abbey after the crowning ceremony, following the newly minted King Charles and Queen Camilla, who will be riding ahead of the Wales' in the Gold State Coach.

At the end of the coronation inside Westminster Abbey, the King and Queen Consort will make an appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace alongside key members of the royal family.
