It's no secret the British royals – the masters of diplomatic dressing – often make sartorial choices with the intention of sending a message.

And it was no different for Catherine, Princess of Wales' second public appearance since revealing she is undergoing treatment for cancer.

Catherine stepped out with her nine-year-old daughter, Princess Charlotte, and her sister, Pippa Matthews, at Wimbledon overnight, sporting a royal purple Safiyaa dress – which she had paired with a unique accessory.

Fastened just below Catherine's right shoulder was a dark purple and green bow, which holds more significance than meets the eye.

Catherine, who is known for her love of sports and athletic prowess, is a patron of the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club, which hosts the prestigious tennis championship every year.

In 1909, the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club adopted green and purple as its official colours, and since 2017, Catherine has shown her support for the organisation by sporting her green and purple bow while attending Wimbledon.

The Princess of Wales took over the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club patronage from the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2016, and has presented the winners of the tournament with their trophies for several years.

This year, however, Catherine has been largely absent from the tournament, with other key royals including Queen Camilla making appearances at Wimbledon in her stead.

That's due to the fact that she has yet to officially return to public life as she undergoes her cancer treatment, though Catherine has made two public appearances for special occasions since announcing her diagnosis – once for Trooping the Colour in June, and again overnight to present the men's trophy to Carlos Alcaraz.

Also making a return to Wimbledon was Catherine's Salamander Torque Forget-Me-Not & Gold Bangle from Halcyon Days, which retails for £150 (approx. $287.30) when it's not sold out.

The Princes of Wales wore the bangle to Wimbledon twice last year, pairing it both times with green ensembles.
