The Duchess of Cambridge has fulfilled her promise to wear "princess pink" to meet a young cancer patient.

Kate carried out the solo engagement on the final day of her and Prince William's Scotland tour.

The duchess met with five-year-old Mila Sneddon, who she had previously spoken with via the phone.

Kate was finally able to see Mila in person a year after her portrait was chosen as a finalist in the duchess's Hold Still lockdown photography exhibition.

The photo was taken by Mila's mother and showed the little girl, who has cancer, kissing the window as her father stood outside during coronavirus pandemic lockdowns.

Kate and Mila's mother Lynda spoke on the phone last year and earlier this month, a six-minute video of the conversation was released by Kensington Palace.

During that call, Mila asked Kate if she was wearing a costume.

"I'm not wearing a princess costume right now, I'm afraid, Mila," the duchess said, who was then told her favourite colour was pink.

"OK, well I have to make sure I go and try and find myself a pink dress so that when one day hopefully… we'll get to meet, I'll remember to wear my pink dress for you."

Kate kept her promise to wear a pink "princess costume" and chose a $1050 silk shirt dress from ME+EM for the occasion.

Little Mila's face lit up when Kate entered the room at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. Mila was also dressed head-to-toe in pink.

"Hi Mila, look at you! I want to give you a big squeezy cuddle, it's so nice to meet you in person," the duchess said.

"I love your dress, can you do a little twirl?" she asked. "Wowsers! And your shoes!"

Speaking of the special meeting later Mila said, "It was so good, I've never met a real princess in my life before".

Mila's mother had previously told the duchess the now-iconic photo of her daughter was taken soon after the UK's first lockdown.

She and husband Scott had made the difficult decision to separate Mila from the family as the little girl was four months into chemotherapy treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

Lynda and Mila remained at the family home while her father and sister returned daily to say hello through the window.

She shared the photo online along with a message about the importance of observing social distancing measures and other health regulations.
