What Kate Middleton's latest outfit teaches us about looking polished on video calls

Thanks to increasingly strict social distancing and isolation measures, the video call is well and truly having a moment.

As well as helping loved ones stay in touch, video conferencing is proving invaluable for businesses working remotely during the coronavirus pandemic.

However, the phenomenon isn't without its dilemmas. Namely: how does one look polished and professional on a video call while working from home, the natural habitat of the trackpant?

Well, look no further than the Duchess of Cambridge.

On Wednesday, Kate Middleton and Prince William spoke to pupils and teachers at UK schools open for vulnerable youth and the children of essential workers via video call.

The Duchess' radiant appearance in the footage, shared by Kensington Palace, was a masterclass in video conferencing in style — without going overboard on the corporatewear.

Here are a few simple styling tricks we can all steal for our own Zoom/Skype/Microsoft Teams appearances:

Keep it simple

From the waist up, at least — you never know, perhaps she was in her PJ pants down below — Kate kept it simple with a round-necked jumper in a block colour.

The simple design and solid shade of the Zara top, which has since sold out (surprise, surprise), was great for a video call as it didn't distract from the conversation.

Patterns and fancy flounces tend to grab the eye, potentially drawing focus from the matter being discussed. Additionally, certain patterns, particularly stripes, will 'strobe' on camera. Not ideal.

The simple approach should also apply to your jewellery. Kate's gold fern earrings from Catherine Zoraida added just the right amount of gleam without becoming a centrepiece.

Choose a rich colour

The sunshiney mustard tone of the Duchess' jumper is nothing short of delightful.

Not only does it suit her beautifully, it's a rich shade that adds just the right amount of brightness to the screen without being overpowering.

When in doubt, put your hair up

For many of us, isolation and working from home has throw our usual hair maintenance routines out the window. (Shampoo? What's shampoo?)

If it's long enough, putting your hair up is an easy way to disguise its less-than-sleek appearance in the event of a video call with your boss.

Kate's half-up-half-down hairstyle is a great option — it's cute, it's neat, and you wouldn't have the faintest idea how many days worth of dry shampoo had accumulated in her roots.
