Kate and Prince William surprise locals in Wales on first joint public engagement outside of home town since lockdown

Prince William and Kate Middleton have surprised locals in south Wales.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge made a visit to Barry Island, famous for the British sitcom Gavin & Stacey starring James Corden.

It marked the couple's first joint public engagement outside of Norfolk, where they have been living, since coronavirus lockdown restrictions eased in the UK.

The royal walkabout looked a little different, with the couple keeping the required distance from the public.

As they waved to locals while walking along the promenade, they both looked thrilled to be back at it following a short family holiday at the Isles of Scilly.

The parents to Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis visited the Island Leisure arcade, which officially reopened today, and tried their hand at winning prizes to take home to the kids.

Kate, 38, gave a big thumbs up when her claw picked up a blue plush toy but looked very disappointed when it fell out from the grips of the metal arm.

Prince William, 38, also had a try but was unsuccessful. The couple were given some toys to take home by owners Andrew and Hilary Phillips.

The Duke and Duchess spoke to the Phillips family, who have been running the amusement centre for four generations.

Kate and William, known to be quite competitive when it comes to sports, played some arcade ball games against each other during the visit as well.

They spoke to businesses in the area about the impact of COVID-19 and how they are adjusting to meet the current government guidelines.

The royal couple then made their way to Shire Hall Care Home in Cardiff where they masked-up and spoke with staff, residents and their families in the garden.

In May, during the height of lockdown, the Duke and Duchess had virtually called a game of Bingo for the residents in the care home.
