The Duchess of Cambridge has been given an honour by the Queen that fits in perfectly with one of her greatest passions.

Kate is now patron of the Royal Photographic Society, a role held by Her Majesty for 67 years.

The announcement coincided with the Duchess taking part in a special photography workshop with children with a keen interest in the hobby.

One of the participants, Josh Evans, was given a few tips by Kate and the experts during the sessions which covered elements of photography including portraits, light and colour.

Writing about the Duchess's new appointment Kensington Palace said, "learning photography is a fun and engaging way to help young people develop confidence and self-expression, and to help develop new skills".

Most notably, the Duchess has become known for taking her own portraits of her children and releasing them to mark their birthdays.

The Royal Photographic Society is one of the world's oldest, founded in 1853 with the objective of promoting the art and science of photography, and in the same year received Royal patronage from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

Kate is using her new role as part of her longstanding work on early years' development, aiming to give every child the best possible start in life. The children at today's event are involved with another of Kate's patronages, Action for Children, a charity committed to helping vulnerable children, young people, and their families, across the UK.

The workshop the children took part in highlighted "how photography provides a universal language for young people to express themselves and explore their thoughts and feelings".
