Kate and Meghan feud too 'raw' for reconciliation

A royal insider has labelled the feud between Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle too "raw" for a reconciliation.

Paul Burrell, Princess Diana's former butler and confidant, said this is particularly true on Kate's part.

"So much has been said and people have been hurt," Burrell explained to The Mirror. "And I don't think they can be mended right now it's going to take time.

"It's still raw and the royals are not easy and forgiving. When something happens they pull the drawbridge up and you can't get in."

He spoke of the late Princess Diana, who died in a car crash in Paris in 1997, and his belief she would have bridged the gap between the brothers.

Burrell believes in her absence, only Kate can bring Prince William and Prince Harry back together, but this may be difficult for her to do considering the circumstances.

"The only person that has a faint chance of reconciliation with the boys will be Kate," adding that too much as been said about Princess Kate by Harry and Meghan in their multiple media interviews, Netflix series Harry & Meghan and Prince Harry's memoir Spare.

Their comments about Kate are in addition to sharing their perceived slights by multiple members of the royal family and the monarchy in general, much of it shared as Queen Elizabeth struggled with ailing health before her death on September 8, 2022.

It was in Harry and Meghan's 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey that Meghan claimed contrary to reports she had made Kate cry in the lead up to her wedding in October 2018, it was Kate who made her cry. Meghan also claimed the royal apologised and sent her flowers.

She confirmed their disagreement was over Princess Charlotte's flower girl dress.

Harry claimed in his book that Kate made Meghan cry in the run-up to their wedding. He wrote he came home to find Meghan "on the floor" and "sobbing" after a row over bridesmaid dresses four days before their wedding.

The palace refused to comment on the claims.

Burrell said he doesn't think Kate is open to a reconciliation because "there's been so much hurt."

"And I think you have to let this wound heal before you can attack it again. And I think it's still very raw in royal circles and none of them are actually, they don't know how to heal this rift. Certainly not whilst Meghan's still around."

He continued: "I don't think Meghan would approve".

"At this moment in time, Meghan has her court intact. She has her husband where she wants him. He's in California. He's away from his family. He is not poisoned by any royal gossip or royal protocol.

"And I think it would serve her best to keep Harry away from William. It's a world she can't compete in."

In addition to the disagreement with Kate over Princess Charlotte's flower girl dress, Meghan has also spoken about William and Kate's reception upon meeting her.

"I was a hugger. I've always been a hugger, I didn't realise that that is really jarring for a lot of Brits," Meghan explained to Oprah.

"I guess I started to understand very quickly that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside. There is a forward-facing way of being, and then you close the door and go 'You can relax now', but that formality carries over on both sides. And that was surprising to me."

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex resigned as senior working royals in January 2020, relocating to the US where they live with their children Archie, four, and Lilibet, two.

The couple has laid bare their dissatisfaction with the time as working royals which has led to tensions between them and Harry's family.

Prince Harry attended his father King Charles' coronation in May alone and is currently back in the UK to attend the WellChild Awards.

He isn't expected to visit with his family during this trip.
