Michelle Obama has spoken out in the wake of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's interview with Oprah Winfrey, saying she prays "that there is forgiveness".

"My hope is that, when I think about what they're going through, I think about the importance of family and I just pray that there is forgiveness and there is clarity and love and resolve at some point in time," she told Access Hollywood. "Because there's nothing more important than family."

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex sat down with Oprah for a tell-all interview, chronicling their struggles to navigate life as senior working members of the British royal family as a couple.

Meghan, 39, made claims of mental health neglect and racism, both of which Harry, backed up.

Meghan said she became suicidal during her pregnancy with Archie due to the strain she was under.

"I just didn't want to be alive any more," she said. "And that was a very clear and real and frightening, constant thought. And I remember how he [Harry] just cradled me."

She claimed when she went to "the institution" for help, it was refused.

"I went to the institution and I said that I needed to go somewhere to get help... And I was told that I couldn't, that it wouldn't be good for the institution."

It was then that Meghan recalled being told by Harry that there had been a comment made by a senior royal about how dark Archie's skin may be, but they stopped short of naming the royal.

Meghan said: "In those months when I was pregnant … we have in tandem the conversation of 'you won't be given security,' 'not going to be given a title', and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he's born."

Oprah later said Harry told her off camera it wasn't the Queen or Prince Philip which leaves Prince Charles and Prince William open to suspicion.

When questioned about the interview during a recent appearance, William commented: "We are very much not a racist family."

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex resigned as senior working members of the British royal family in January 2020 and are now based in a home they purchased in Montecito, California in the US.

They are expecting their second child later this year. Son Archie turns two on May 6.
