Count Nikolai shares special memories and photos from his childhood home, Schackenborg Castle

Count Nikolai has returned to the palatial home where he spent his childhood, reliving happy memories from years gone by.

The 25-year-old took his girlfriend Benedikte Thoustrup to Schackenborg Castle, in Southern Jutland, near the northern border with Germany.

Nikolai shared several photos from his stay at the castle, showing its beautiful grounds and impressive interiors.

Among the photos were framed pictures of Nikolai's paternal grandparents, Queen Margrethe II and the late Prince Henrik.

Nikolai also posted photos showing him playing pool, walking through the castle's gardens and shooting clay pigeons – which he was quick to clarify after someone asked whether he was hunting.

His followers on social media welcomed Nikolai back to the region and thanked him for sharing photos from his stay.

"Back at my childhood home," Count Nikolai captioned the images.

Replying to one comment, Nikolai said it was "great to be back".

Nikolai was then asked about his favourite memories from Schackenborg over the years and he said "probably all the christmases I've spent here".

The Baroque castle was built in the 1600s by Danish war hero and aristocrat Hans Schack and has been linked with the Danish royal family since the late 1970s.

Nikolai's father Prince Joachim was gifted the castle by Viscount Hans Schack 6th and his wife, who decided to sign over the property to the young prince because they had no heirs of their own.

Prince Joachim was just nine-years-old when the castle was given to him in 1978.

He and his then-wife Countess Alexandra lived at the castle with their two sons Nikolai and Count Felix, 22, until their divorce in 2005.

It remained Prince Joachim's main family home when he married Princess Marie in 2008. The couple now have two more children Count Henrik, 15, and Countess Athena, 12.

The family used Schakenborg as their main residence until 2014 when ownership was transferred to the Schackenborg Foundation, of which Prince Joachim and Princess Marie are patrons.

The south wing of the castle remains the private residence of Prince Joachim and Princess Marie and their children and they continue to use it at various times throughout the year.

Members of the public can visit the castle and its grounds all year.

Prince Joachim also has an apartment at Amalienborg, the winter residence of the Danish royal family in Copenhagen where King Frederik and Queen Mary are currently staying.

He and Princess Marie, and their two youngest children, are currently living in Washington D.C. where Joachim is working at the Danish embassy.

Count Nikolai lives in Copenhagen with Thoustrup and last year the couple spent several months in Sydney where Nikolai was on exchange studying at the University of Technolgy.
