Everything we learned about Archie in Meghan and Harry's Oprah interview

Among the many revelations Prince Harry and Meghan Markle shared during their interview with Oprah Winfrey were some intimate insights about their son.

Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, who has widely remained out of the public eye since he was born in May 2019, was a key talking point during the couple's conversation with the veteran TV host.

Here's what we learnt about baby Archie during the tell-all interview.

His favourite word

In one of the more heartwarming moments of the interview, black-and-white footage capturing Archie frolicking on the beach and playing with the family's dog Guy was aired.

Harry and Meghan revealed their son, who turns two on May 6, has been "on a roll" when it comes to developing new skills and language.

The Duke of Sussex had a proud dad moment when he said Archie had begun speaking regularly, pointing at things around him and identifying them, like "house".

Meghan noted Archie was developing quite the vocabulary, saying "in the past few weeks" his favourite word has been "hydrate".

Archie is getting a little sister

Meghan and Harry revealed they are expecting a "little girl", beaming as she delivered the happy news.

They marvelled at the idea of their son becoming a big brother, saying they were expecting their brood to grow "sometime this summer."

Harry said it was "amazing" to find out they were expecting a daughter after having a boy, telling Oprah, "What more could you ask for?"

The couple also revealed they won't be having more children.

There were concerns over what Archie's skin colour would be

In arguably the most shocking claim of the interview, Meghan said there were discussions within the royal family about how "dark" her child's skin would be.

The duchess, who is biracial, said the discussion was relayed to her by Harry, with both declining to name the person involved because it would be "damaging".

The duke told Oprah he would "never" share what was said during the conversation, but did indicate the gist of the discussion centred around the question "what will the kids look like?", and said it was "awkward".

The call to not give Archie a royal title came from the palace

Meghan confirmed the decision not to give Archie a royal title was ultimately made by the palace, not by the couple, as was reported at the time.

"They didn't want him to be a prince or a princess, not knowing what the gender would be," Meghan explained to Oprah.

Following on from the "concerns and conversations" within the palace about how "dark" Archie's skin would be when he was born, Meghan confirmed she and Harry did not say they did not want a title for their son. He is simply known as Master Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

Referencing the palace's decision to not give him a title, she said, "It's not their right to take it away", adding that "the idea of the first member of colour in this family not being titled" was painful.

Archie is still seventh in line to the throne, and it is royal protocol for the grandson of the reigning monarch to receive a title.

Archie's security was compromised

In the first half of the interview, Meghan claimed Archie was not eligible for palace security due to his lack of a royal title.

She told Oprah her son "wasn't going to receive security," leaving the TV host shocked and asking, "What?"

Noting she and Harry dealt with the issue "for the last few months" of her pregnancy, the duchess said despite her son not officially holding a royal title "he needs to be safe."

"If you're saying the title is what's going to affect your protection - we haven't created this monster machine around us in terms of clickbait and tabloid fodder, you've allowed that to happen," Meghan told Oprah, referencing the media storm that circulated the couple in the weeks leading to the birth of their son.

"Our son needs to be safe."
