'Does anyone know what this is?' Question about outlet on skirting board triggers discussion on Reddit

A Reddit user has left some social media users stumped after sharing a photo of a phone outlet, asking if anyone can help identify it.

They have shared a photo of the anomaly on Reddit's 'Sydney' thread along with the question: "Does anyone know what this is?"

The photo is a close up of the skirting board in the home to which a plug is attached, although it isn't in use and looks as though it hasn't been for a while.

Redditers were quick to identify the mysterious plug.

"Old landline phone connection," one person answered..

To which another responded: "Thanks for making me feel old lol. Ours still works, but it's just an ADSL connection now. Haven't had a home phone in years."

"These were quite fancy because it meant you could unplug the phone and move it. Ours were just wired in and couldn't be moved without unscrewing the wall thingy," another explained.

"I'm only 25 & I remember these wtf," another shared.

"You can't be serious.... so it has finally come to pass that not even phone lines are recognised," one commented.

Another explained: "Most would have no idea why when we end a phone call we say we "hang up" the phone, either."

"Wait till you have to explain how fax machines worked," another shared.

"I wouldn't say it's an old land line telephone connection, it is current landline connection," one Redditer maintains.

One person joked: "Happy 8th birthday!"

"Yes, installed by Telecom (now Telstra) in all homes at the time," another explained.

"We've finally reached the generation that doesn't remember the pre internet hardware," one person observed.

"Jesus Christ. Am I that old that a phone jack for a landline phone is like an ancient relic to some people but to me something instantly recognisable?" one person shared.

"It's a listening device," another joked.
