Fire station saves the day when blizzard threatens to ruin prom photos

When a blizzard struck ahead of the school prom in a US town, the local fire station came to the rescue - and they didn’t even need to turn on the sirens.
 
Posing for photos ahead of the event is part of the ritual, but students in Forest Lake, Minnesota were faced with far-from-ideal weather conditions on the day of their formal.
 
A historic blizzard over the weekend resulted in heavy snowfall and winds measuring 80km/hr, making those classic backyard and park photoshoots virtually impossible.
 
However, the Forest Lake Fire and Rescue came up with a Plan B.
 
The department opened its doors for three hours on Saturday, allowing the teens to gather and take photos in their formal wear without being exposed to the dangerous weather conditions.

"We would like to thank all of the students that showed up and allowed us to be a part of their special day," the department wrote on Facebook.

Fire Chief Alan Newman told Yahoo Lifestyle the idea to open the station came from the wife of one of the firefighters, who then pitched it to him.

“My initial thought was, ‘Who is going to want to take a picture in their prom gear in front of a fire truck?’” he said.
 
The answer to that question soon became apparent: everyone.

“When we opened the doors at 3 p.m. we had over 50 cars in our parking lot, and it just grew from there,” Newman recalled.
