Prince William struggled with being a new dad, Kate Middleton says

Hearing that the world’s most famous parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, sometimes find things tough isn’t just interesting.

It’s profoundly reassuring.

When Kate Middleton told a single dad that Prince William had struggled to learn the ropes, he was touched.

Billy, who’s bringing up seven-month-old-daughter Violet on his own, was talking to the Duchess at one of her royal engagements, about his struggles in the early days.

Regardless of their very different circumstances, Middleton saw something familiar in the 39-year-old’s situation.

"She was saying William was sort of similar,” he told Hello! Hello! .

“I just wanted to let her know how Family Action have been there for me and I think they need more support."

He was talking about a charity of which the Queen herself is a patron, which gives support to vulnerable families.

It’s one of the groups offering care at the Hornsey Road Children’s Centre, where Middleton and Billy were chatting.

The group, which provides perinatal and antenatal mental healthcare, is especially pertinent cause to Middleton and Prince William - both fierce mental health campaigners.

Middleton had originally planned to visit the centre in September, but cancelled the day due to severe morning sickness.

And though there might have been a lot of interest in the coat she wore (an admittedly very nice cream one from Goat, recycled from her 2013 pregnancy with Prince George), volunteer worker Maggie Sandy said her visit had much a bigger impact.

"It's so good because it really raises the profile of perinatal mental health,” she said.

“We always say that this goes across social class, we reach all sorts of parents and it is actually to do with being a parent and she can relate to that."
