Prince Harry's sweet surprise for 99-year-old Aussie fan Daphne Dunne

Prince Harry is the one member of the royal family who's always been full of surprises.

It seems the Duke of Sussex still has a few of them up his sleeve, as he had a very sweet surprise for his biggest fan Daphne Dunne, who turned 99 on Friday.

The Aussie war widow has met the 34-year-old prince a total of three times now, with the most recent having been during the royal tour of Australia, Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand in 2018.

During Harry and Meghan’s walkabout at the Sydney Opera House, as soon as the Duke saw Daphne he went straight over to her for a big hug, and also introduced the Aussie fan to his new wife.

Daphne, who was unfortunately in hospital on her birthday, wasn't at all expecting to hear from Harry.

"He wouldn't even think of it," she admitted on the Today show, but oh how Daphne was wrong.

The 99-year-old received a personalised letter from both Harry and his pregnant wife, Meghan.

The couple sent Daphne their "warmest wishes" on her "important and impressive milestone" of a birthday.

The whole letter said:

Dear Daphne,

My wife and I send our warmest wishes to you on the occasion of your 99th birthday on Friday.

We hope you have a wonderful celebration surrounded by family and friends and that you've managed to escape hospital. Congratulations on reaching this important and impressive milestone before your centenary year next year.

Happy birthday, Daphne.

Best wishes,

Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex

Daphne's daughter, Michelle Haywood, told Today a friend contacted Harry via email and received a reply overnight, which they were "so excited" about.

So, how exactly did Daphne wrangle getting such a letter? Well, according to Daphne, it was all down to one simple thing.

"I just threw him a kiss and he came," she said.

Maybe that's something we should all try when our birthdays come around.
