Parents 'spread kindness' at Texas school in the aftermath of Florida shooting

Parents of fifth-grade students at Mary Moore Elementary in Arlington, Texas have decided to do a little redecorating of the school's bathrooms, in an effort to promote 'happiness and kindness'.

The 37-hours of DIY came in the aftermath of the recent Florida shootings, with the volunteer parents wanting to give their kids messages of positive encouragement across their school day.

Popular phrases emblazoned across walls and toilet doors for the 900 primary-school aged children, include sentiments such as: "Choose joy", "You are enough", "She believed she could and so she did" and "Your mistakes don't define you".

The group proudly posted photos of their artistic handiwork on the school's Facebook page, which was instantly met with international applause and over 80,000 shares on social media.

Principal, Tyson Jones, told Babble: "The timing with the Florida shooting has definitely made the message have a little more meaning. 

"As we struggle to understand the ‘why’ behind the tragedy, extra kindness and hope is helpful to all," he added.

"We strongly believe in the power of spreading love, kindness, and positivity through our campus," Principal Jones told Love What Matters, admitting the idea had been in the works for a couple of months - thanks to their theme of Happiness this year - but felt like they had to deliver in light of the horrific events in Parkland.

"We feel that our children are privy to too much negativity in their lives via social media and television, and we had a very special group of parents step forward to complete this project and add a piece of daily positive encouragement for our students."

Gunman Nikolas Cruz went on a Valentine's Day rampage at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High in Florida, killing 17 people after he opened fire on his fellow students in his school's gymnasium.
