1. Timing is crucial

When it comes to securing the best prices, timing is crucial, and not just time of booking, but time of travel.

To secure better deals, consider travelling during off-peak times when demand is lower. You can also plan trips after school holidays and also consider flying midweek instead of on weekends.

2. Do your research

It's easier than ever to compare prices online so make sure to do your research.

From flights to accommodation to activities you can do to once you arrive, check out what's on offer and you can easily choose what is in your price range.

Being aware of travel bundles is also important as they aren't always the cheapest option so once you find one that sounds good, check that it is by doing some per item searches.

3. Don't limit yourself to air travel

Don't limit yourself to air travel alone. You might choose a cruise to a destination of your choices and there are some great deals going at the moment.

Or if you are travelling domestically, you may choose a road trip, or even a country train to get you from place to place.

Then there are buses and even RV's and caravans, with these adding to the experience in an affordable way.

4. Be flexible

Be flexible both about where you plan to travel and where you'll stay once you arrive, but particularly the destination.

Sometimes dream destinations are too pricey due to connecting flights, but other destinations are much more affordable, depending on the time of the year.

5. Talk to a travel agent, but reserve the right not to book with them

Travel agents can still help out when it comes to figuring out the most affordable ways to travel, but don't sign on the dotted line until you check their prices online.

Sometimes you can do better yourself.

And we can't stress this enough. Travel insurance is the best money you will ever spend. Never ever skimp on that.
