In May 2024, multiple outbreaks of avian flu were reported in Victoria, New South Wales, and the ACT, directly impacting poultry farms.

Impacted poultry was quickly culled, and the industry has remained vigilant ever since; however, more than 10 per cent of Australia's egg-laying chicken flock was gone as a result.

Soon, supermarket shelves were bare, where eggs were usually displayed. Those that were stocked soared in price.

The cost of cocoa has fallen by 29.26 per cent since May, although this is yet to be reflected on supermarket shelves.

Popular brands like Cadburys and Nestle are standing by their recent price increases, which were explained as being in part due to the cost of cocoa, as well as an increase in production costs such as manufacturing and transport.

Even Aldi increased the price of its popular Choceur range, from $2.69 in 2019 to $4.99 in 2025.
