Ayan Broomfield hit with $1800 tariff after online shopping order

US-based tennis player Ayan Broomfield has had a rude awakening after trying to do some online shopping.

The 27-year-old shared in a TikTok video, "Tariffs are officially affecting my fashion and I don't know what to do."

The athlete, who is the partner of American tennis player Frances Tiafoe, said she decided to treat herself to some new clothes from Stockholm-based brand Arakii.

She acknowledged that the items were "a little bit on the pricier side", paying $US685 ($1067) for two items.

The order was confirmed to be paid and shipped, but days later she received another email.

"I click on the link and it had the audacity to say that I owed $US1155.98 ($1800)," she said with her hand over her mouth in disbelief. The amount of the fee is almost double the amount of her original order.

"I thought it was a scam. I thought it was a joke, so I just left to be until I got home and saw this on my door," she continued, holding up a note from the United States Postal Service alerting her that she did indeed owe the amount.

The Canadian player continued in a warning to her fans, "Make sure you're looking at where your pieces are sourced from or else you're gonna get hit with a crazy tariff."

The athlete's dilemma played out the issue that has been consuming American politics for months now, with commenters further explaining.

"You don't owe them. You owe your government. The company didn't set the tariffs, your president did," one said.

"The tariffs are for YOU ALL not for the rest of the countries," another said, referring to Americans, "Trump is pushing y'all to buy from American brands only."

Some told Broomfield to put things into perspective. "At least for you it's just fashion!" one wrote, "People over here have to worry about medicine, diapers for babies, life-saving supplies, food, etc."

Commenters shared that Broomfield's video showed "why we need to stay engaged in politics".

One said, "No one pays attention until it is touching them, and by then sometimes it's too late."
