Michelle Obama drew such loud cheers during her surprise appearance at the Grammys she had to quieten the audience and restart her speech.

But despite the rockstar reception appearing alongside Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez and Jada Pinkett Smith, it seems the best-selling author is still simply "daughter" to her mum, Marian Robinson.

Giving Michelle the ultimate reality check after her Grammys debut, Marian brought her daughter back down to earth in a series of text messages.

Michelle then posted the conversations to Instagram on Wednesday, in a post captioned: "When your mum doesn't think you're a "real" celebrity...Tonight in Phoenix, I shared this text thread from my mum from #Grammys night, and I just had to share it with all of you."

"I guess you were a hit at the Grammys," Marian said in her text.

Her daughter asked mum if she had watched. Mum replied she saw it and then asked if her daughter had met "any of the real stars" on the night.

After a text squabble over whether Michelle had told Marian she would be appearing on the show, she ended with a mic drop moment.

"And I AM A real star...by the way...," she wrote.

Her mother replied, "Yeah", with Michelle finishing up with love-heart emoticons.

In a few hours the post has had almost two million likes and over 30,000 comments.
