The noticeable absence at Donald Trump's side during the Republican National Convention

It has been a truly memorable few days for US politics, with the first assassination attempt against a President in 43 years taking place against Donald Trump.

Days later, he claimed his title at at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, being named the Republican presidential nominee for the third time.

Amid all the hubbub, it's easy to not notice the details. But one person's absence was noticed – that of Melania Trump, Donald Trump's wife.

Melania was nowhere to be seen at the Republican National Convention, nor was she heard, not delivering a speech at the convention as she did in 2016 and 2020.

It is a decades-long tradition for the spouse of presidential nominees to speak during the conventions, but instead the guests heard from new RNC co-chair Lara Trump – who is married to Donald's son Eric – as well as former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Melania is expected to be seen at the convention by Thursday, when Donald gives his final speech.

Melania has distanced herself from her husband's political ventures after her stint as First Lady from 2017 to 2021.

She made limited appearances on this campaign trail, being seen casting her presidential primary ballot at a Florida polling location in March and hosting a fundraiser for an LGBTQ-inclusive conservative group in April.

When asked about further appearances on the campaign trail, she simply said, "Stay tuned."

Following the assassination attempt days ago, she released a statement condemning the attack.

"When I watched that violent bullet strike my husband, Donald, I realised my life, and Barron's life, were on the brink of devastating change," she wrote.

"A monster who recognised my husband as an inhuman political machine attempted to ring out Donald's passion – his laughter, ingenuity, love of music, and inspiration," she said.

"The core facets of my husband's life – his human side – were buried below the political machine. Donald, the generous and caring man who I have been with through the best of times and the worst of times.

"American politics are only one vehicle that can uplift our communities. Love, compassion, kindness and empathy are necessities."
