White House hits back after Melania Trump's September 11 coat draws criticism

The White House has been forced to respond social media criticism of Melania Trump after the First Lady found herself making headlines for her fashion choices once again.

What was a tribute to September 11 victims by President Trump on the 18th anniversary of the attacks has turned into criticism of the First Lady for making an 'insensitive' style choice.

Donald Trump took to Twitter to share a photo of him with Melania at a 2018 service that honoured those who died on United Airlines Flight 93 -- the words "We will never forget" and the date inscribed beneath the American flag.

However, it seems a year later critics have a lot to say about the First Lady's custom-made Hervé Pierre now they're seeing it from a different angle.

Many Twitter users compared the white trim on the back of Melania's coat to an outline of one of the World Trade Center towers being struck by a plane.

When questioned about the backlash relating to the First Lady's coat, White House spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham, who was the former press secretary for Melania, had a short, sharp response.

"It's ridiculous," Grisham told USA Today.

This isn't the first time Melania has faced heavy criticism for an outfit.

Last year she wore a khaki Zara jacket, with the words "I REALLY DON'T CARE DO, DO U?" emblazoned on the back in graffiti text, while boarding a plane to visit detained immigrant children who were separated from their families at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The First Lady is yet to comment on the latest drama surrounding her coat.
