Martha Stewart's unexpected stance on Christmas trees - and the festive tradition she draws the line at

Martha Stewart has weighed in with her unconventional stance on Christmas trees.

Speaking to the US Today Show, the American businesswoman and lifestyle personality, 81, expressed at she no longer has the patience for real Christmas trees.

"I absolutely prefer artificial trees now, I do not want needles all over my house," she said.

Artificial trees are not only easier, Stewart says, but she doesn't have to worry about them drying out – especially since she sets up trees in "about four different places" on her property and in four different houses.

She also says she prefers "all white" Christmas tree lights instead of colourful ones, and insists all tree decorations should match.

Stewart also touched on another debated festive tradition – the Christmas newsletter.

While Stewart is a fan of sending out a "really beautiful, visual card" with "wonderful photographs or a piece of artwork," she draws the line at sending a newsletter or update along with it.

"My life is an open book. You can read about my life online, on Instagram," she said.

"You don't also have to see it on my Christmas card."

In her interview, she also implores celebrities like Mariah Carey to not skip over Thanksgiving in their rush to celebrate Christmas.

Addressing the All I Want for Christmas is You singer, Stewart commented, "I think we need Thanksgiving, I really do. It's just an uplifting remembering of good times passed."

But she does clarify that it is OK to listen to Christmas songs during Thanksgiving season, considering "there are no Thanksgiving songs."
