'I'm engaged, but I can't be bothered getting married'

We've been engaged for nearly a year and have not set a wedding date.

I should also mention Jason and I have been together for 13 years, so you'd think we'd be keen to get married.

Not so much.

Well, it's not that we don’t want to get married but organising a wedding is a huge undertaking and to be honest, I can't be bothered.

If I hear another person ask, 'Have you set a date yet?' I think I'll scream. Or punch them. I've come very close.

But through gritted teeth I respond, 'No, not yet. We'll start organising things soon.'

It's not like we're completely disorganised. I bought my dress in February and have the bridesmaids' outfits sorted too. So, we can tick off some boxes.

I'm exhausted after planning our engagement party, which was in June, and the thought of having to organise and wrangle another major event has put me off altogether.

But now it seems all our family and friends are booking themselves out next year with holidays – and it's forcing us to get our act together.

It's also stressing me out. As I'm writing this, my heart rate is getting faster by the second.

See, the pressure is on to lock in a date that works for our guests. Oh, yes, and us – the soon-to-be bride and groom. We do matter, apparently, though it doesn't really feel that way.

I should mention Jason and I love winter and made it clear YEARS ago that when we were to ever get married, it would be in the cooler months.

But now, it literally seems like everyone we are planning to invite has booked a major holiday in 2019, blocking out weeks – and even months – that we can potentially hold our wedding.

All of May is now gone, thanks to a relative's Canadian holiday. A huge portion of July is wiped out for a friend's cruise, while the ENTIRE months of July and August could see two key family members living it up in Europe.

And… it just gets better and better…. my best friend, and maid of honour, has decided to move overseas for six months.

Rather than sending out a 'save the date', we should have just asked everyone what dates suit THEM.

To be fair, our family and friends have been asking us for a wedding date ever since we become engaged. Yes, that question actually started hours after Jason proposed.

Perhaps they became fed up with our lack of progress.

But as a result, our options are getting slimmer and slimmer – AND we haven’t even started asking venues for their availability yet.

The one thing working in our favour is that we are set on a small – VERY small – wedding and are not approaching the typical 'function centre' type venues.

But at this rate, the size of the wedding will probably be determined by who is in town and not by our own choosing!

It's also very likely Jason and I could become fed up with the whole process and have a shotgun wedding with no guests but our official witnesses.

Actually, I'm starting to like the sound of that.
