An Aussie Redditor has launched a desperate search for the owner of a lost ring, explaining they found the item at a Victorian beach.

"Found this ring at the beach today and would like to give it an opportunity to get back to its owner," they write on Reddit's 'Melbourne' thread. "It has a message with a name on the inside so if it's yours and you can tell me the message and roughly where you lost it, I'll get it back to you.

"If you know someone who lost one like this, please pass this message in and hopefully it can be returned."

"Cartier rings have serial numbers – I'd recommend contacting Cartier, as they may have the owner's information on file," one person suggests.

"The serial would be just to the left of the Au750 stamp. The owner may have also reported it to the VicPol lost property portal, I certainly would if I lost a love ring!"

Many others confirm taking the ring to the luxury jeweller will help track down the owner.

"It would be great to return it to its owner. There are not many better feelings in the world," the original poster said, adding that they had been searching the beach with a metal detector when they made the discovery.

The also said this was by far the most valuable item they have ever found during one of their searches.

However, some commenters couldn't help but share a warning.

"Imagine if the owner went through a breakup and tossed the ring in the water as a dramatic act of healing ... then you show up on their doorstep with a big grin on your face," one suggested.

Another commented: "Am I the only dramatic person who thinks that someone chucked this ring in the ocean, like after getting their heart broken? Coz that would so be like me!"

Others are more positive about it.

"As someone who just lost their engagement ring I really hope there are more good people like you out in the world! Thank you for doing the right thing," one said.

Another suggested taking the ring to the local police and leaving it to them to track down the owner.
