Drew and Lisa Vanderkleed’s world fell apart in the most unexpected way earlier this month, when their two-year-old son, Logan, got his neck stuck in their automatic car window.

Sadly, on Thursday, after several days in hospital their toddler passed away.

However, amid their devastation Drew and Lisa have been forced to defend themselves, after being criticised for smiling in hospital photos posted to a Facebook page for their son, named Love For Logan.

Hitting back, the family shared heartbreaking photos as they cried over the toddler.

“If you have criticized our family for smiling while Logan was in the hospital, please let me know if these pictures of us crying makes you feel better,” they wrote.

“We smiled because we were trying to be hopeful for that miracle. Instead we were torn up inside.”

Another post on the page also informed the public: “Friends of the family respectfully ask that if you have something negative to say, you do so on your own page.”

“There is enough sadness and anger in the world, please use this as a platform for celebrating Logan's life and building each other up, instead of tearing each other down.”

The couple also have a daughter - Kendra, five - an older sister to Logan.

Friends have rallied behind the family, setting up a GoFundMe page to help raise money to cover hospital and funeral costs.
