Tenants evicted so landlord can use home for birthday party

A tenant has been left fuming after his landlord decided to evict him from his rented accommodation in order to throw a birthday party in the house.

Taking to Twitter to share the bizarre story, London local Steffy started by making the bold statement that London landlords are "the dregs of society."

Steffy lives in a home divided into two separate flats, the top floor housing himself and at least one other tenant while the landlord lives in the downstairs space.

The issue arose when the landlord, who is about to turn 50, decided to throw a birthday party and wanted access to the whole flat to do so, including the communal areas on Steffy's level.

Steffy and the other tenant weren't so keen on the idea and told the landlord as much, but were never expecting how he would respond.

"My landlord served us notice because he wanted to have a party using the whole house," he wrote on Twitter.

He then posted screenshots of an email from the landlord explaining his decision to evict Steffy and the other tenant, as well as a photo of the official eviction notice.

This is something you have to read to believe.

"I have finally made a decision about the party, as it's such a huge milestone in my life I will be having the event at my home," the landlord's email began.

"Although technically you have room tenancy agreements meaning you guys are really responsible for your individual bedrooms, I don't want to commission the use of upstairs communal areas, especially since you guys have said that you aren't comfortable with this."

"It leaves me with very little option but to provide you with the necessary 2-month notice to vacate the premises."

Sorry, what?

Twitter users were just as baffled as Steffy was by the decision, hundreds wondering why the landlord was more willing to kick out multiple paying tenants than simply choose a different venue for his birthday party.

Others encouraged Steffy to seek advice from housing and tenant's support services, as there could be ways for him to challenge the eviction.

Some even suggested a few ways for Steffy to get back at the landlord, one tweeting; "Be a shame if there was a noise complaint during his party."

Here's hoping the landlord comes to his senses before it's too late.
