Royal expert believes Harry and Meghan may lose their titles

Royal expert Katie Nicholl believes Prince Harry and Meghan may be in danger of losing their royal titles.

In an interview with Today Extra for her latest book The New Royals, Nicholl discussed the future of the royal family, touching on the scandals they are going through currently.

Most imminent is Prince Harry's upcoming memoir, of which there is speculation that he might scrap it completely.

Nicholl thinks this is unlikely, however.

"He's taken a significant advance – about $17 million with a further 17 million to come," she said. "I don't think that's an easy sum for him to give up. Don't forget one of the reasons that he left the royal family was to become financially independent.

"But I think there's definitely a fair amount of backtracking going on and some hasty rewriting, and, you know, obviously wanting to bring the book up to speed."

Nicholl believes the prince and his family are on "thin ice", especially with their past interviews like the one with Oprah, which rocked the royal family.

"I think they're at serious risk of possibly not getting titles for their children, possibly even losing titles for themselves," said Nicholl.

The author also touched on the feud between Harry and his brother, Prince William, saying it stemmed from their teen years, ever since Harry's infamous underage drinking scandal in 2002.

"William was also involved in this, you know, he wasn't completely innocent. But of course, you know, it was far more serious having the heir to the throne involved in a sort of underage drinking scandal, which at that point was splashed all over the front pages of the tabloids than Prince Harry.

"I think even at that point even as even as a young man, that idea of being spare. And I suppose at times the scapegoat didn't always fit for Harry."

Nicholl believes this is what led to Harry leaving the royal family, refuting the belief that it was his wife Meghan Markle who led him away from the royal life.

"We call it 'Megxit', right? It's the very suggestion that it's all down to Megan, that's why Harry wants to leave... Sources assure me that actually it was a joint decision and that Harry had been in some ways looking for a way out of the royal family for some time."
