Kate Middleton at the BAFTAS 2018: Duchess shuns black 'Time's Up' red carpet

The Duchess of Cambridge has joined in with the muted palette on the BAFTA red carpet, wearing a dark green Jenny Packham dress with a black belt.

Kate, who is expecting her third child in April, is attending the British Academy Film Awards with her husband, Prince William, who is president of the U.K. movie academy.

Female BAFTA attendees had been urged to wear black in solidarity with the ‘Time’s Up’ initiative, which was sparked by widespread allegations of sexual harassment and abuse within the entertainment industry.

Kate's choice found a middle way between making a political statement — something the royal family scrupulously avoids — and ignoring the gesture by wearing a bright colour, with her green dress. 

She did, however honour the sartorial code with a black belt and clutch bag.

“We are working to continue the incredible movement this side of the Atlantic,” a letter, sent to BAFTA invitees on behalf of “a collective of UK based female film and television industry leaders” and obtained by Deadline, reads.

“Wearing black is a strong, unifying and simple statement – a physical and visual representation of our solidarity with people across all industries who have experienced sexual harassment and abuse or have been held back due to an imbalance in power.”

Protocol reportedly prevents members of the Royal Family from making public political statements, regardless of their views. They aren’t even permitted to vote.

Prince William wore a black tuxedo and white shirt.
