Ben Fordham has weighed in on Jan Caro's ageism claim, cheekily posing whether a crowdfunding page should be set up to assist the Australian author and her husband.

The 2GB breakfast host made the quip on air earlier today, one day after Caro made headlines for a column she wrote about her husband's experience at a local bakery.

The social commentator wrote a piece for Sunday Life in which she claimed her 68-year-old husband was humiliated after a shop assistant referred to him as "young man".

"Well, he was just standing there minding his own business in a queue waiting to order some bread, and the man behind the counter said to him, 'And what can I get for you, young man?' which immediately made him feel old," Caro told 3AW's Dee Dee Dunleavy.

"When you call out something about someone, so it's the same with casual sexism, when you refer to someone, something along the lines of 'give us a smile, love', what you do is you reduce that person to their gender.

"But it's so obviously not meant to say, 'I think you're young', it's actually saying, 'I think you're really old'. That's what that reverse, kind of, remark says."

When Dunleavy asked Caro whether she was overreacting, the writer offered this reply.

"You don't have to understand that. Our feelings are our own and when you get to a certain age you get a lot of those little stings," she said.

"A lot of those little flicks about your age ... they accumulate and you start to feel a bit sensitive about it because it happens so often."

"Should we set up a GoFundMe page for Jane Caro and her poor husband?" he said, referring to the popular crowdfunding platform.

"I don't know how they're going to recover. If you'd like to help out let me know… our thoughts and prayers go your way, Jane."

A day earlier, Fordham made a brief comment on the story, advising that if someone was upset by the baker's words they "need to renew your priorities".
