Jacinda Ardern pays tribute to her mum on Mother's Day

Jacinda Ardern has posted a photo of her mum Laurell for Mother's Day, recalling a time when they sat together in the window of a bookstore.

The New Zealand Prime Minister wrote in her caption: "That time my mum agreed to sit with me and read in the window of a shop in Auckland to mark Bookshop Week... one of many things my mother has dutifully done alongside me, because that's what mums do."

"To all the mothers and mother figures out there, a huge thank you. I count myself lucky everyday to have the best you could ever imagine."

The post struck a chord with Ardern's followers. It has been 'liked' over 100,000 times and received more than 1,000 comments.

"Happy Mother's Day to you and your beautiful mum Jacinda. Thanks for all that you do for us while raising your little Neve!" one follower wrote.

Another commented: "Jacinda, the fact that you are reading Into the River in this photo … is EVERYTHING!"

"Happy Mother's Day to you & all the mums out there. My present was your biography. Excited to read it when there's a quiet moment. This looks like bliss!" another wrote.

"Happy Mother's Day hope you have a lovely day with your family and take a rest! You deserve it!"

Ardern's daughter Neve, her first child with partner Clarke Gayford, turns two on June 21.

The Prime Minister also took part in a quarantine video with other famous Kiwi mums, including Xena star Lucy Lawless and Hilary Barry, in which they 'pass the chocolate'. They ended the clip by wishing each other a Happy Mother's Day.

Jacinda and her two-year-old daughter were photographed stepping onto sacred Treaty Grounds in Waitangi, ahead of New Zealand's national day. The day is celebrated every February 6th, and is culturally significant as it commemorates the first signing of New Zealand's founding document.

She is only the second leader in the world to have given birth while still in office, and appeared with her little girl along with her partner Clarke Gayford, at the remembrance ceremony.

Ardern fell pregnant with her first child just three months after taking office.

She has been widely praised for her handling of the cornonavirus crisis, with restrictions set to ease in New Zealand this week in line with the rest of the world.
