NZ PM Jacinda Ardern reveals how Clarke Gayford proposed to her

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was "surprised" when her partner Clarke Gayford proposed over the Easter weekend. 

Gayford proposed with his grandmother's engagement ring, Ardern said at Monday's post-Cabinet meeting.

When asked about her upcoming wedding, she jokingly interrupted with: "Any other questions?"

"I was surprised by the question," Ardern said of the Easter engagement, and said she had "absolutely no idea" when the pair will get married.

"We haven't made any plans at all."

Ardern said Gayford popped the question at the top of Mokotahi Hill in Mahia, New Zealand.

"There was a beautiful outlook. There was Clarke, myself and a member of the DPS (PM's security) ... also a couple of locals from Mahia and a dog which tried to eat the chocolate that Clarke bought me," Ardern said.

But the Prime Minister was tight-lipped on any other details.

"There are some things I wouldn't mind keeping for us," she said.
