Hurricane Irma damages Pippa Middleton's in-laws' hotel

The most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic, Hurricane Irma has left a trail of devastation as it ploughs through the Caribbean.

The category 5 storm, carrying winds of around 290km per hour, has so far killed at least 10 people and caused widespread destruction throughout several eastern islands.

It has also lashed Puerto Rico, leaving at least half the country without electricity.

One of the countless properties wrecked by Irma belongs to the in-laws of Pippa Middleton, the sister of the Duchess of Cambridge.

Eden Rock hotel, a luxury resort on the island of St Barthelemy, was purchased by David and Jane Matthews - the parents of Pippa’s husband James Matthews - in 1995.

Photos shared on social media by St Barts resident Kevin Barrallon, show the upmarket hotel inundated with water and strewn with rubble. It had closed on Tuesday in anticipation of the hurricane.

Eden Rock hotel, which sits on a rocky promontory overlooking St Jeans Bay, has hosted a number of famous names, including Jennifer Lopez and Jessica Alba.

Pippa and James have also regularly stayed there together.
