How We Met: Michael ‘Wippa’ Wipfli loved Lisa as soon as he saw her

“God, I remember thinking, ‘Where does she work – I need to know.’”

Michael ‘Wippa’ Wipfli saw the woman who’d become his wife as they lined up in the café at the bottom of his building. Then realised she’d just started at his office.

“Our eyes caught when we were ordering some ham or possibly turkey wraps,” the Nova radio host (of Fitzy & Wippa fame) tells 9Honey.

“I just had to do the classic, ‘Oh, you must be new here. I hadn’t noticed you for a second. Great to meet you.’”

Both he and Lisa decided it was serious almost immediately, though that particular synchronicity didn’t emerge until later.

“What’s funny is when you get to the point in a relationship when you have that conversation of ‘When did you know?’ ‘Well when did you know?’” he says.

“She said, ‘I remember thinking after two weeks from when I met you – I might marry that man.’ That’s exactly what my thought was as well. Which is pretty special.”

The details of the proposal are a bit of a blur: any ‘special plan’ got thrown out the window in the excitement and Lisa grabbed the ring before Wippa had even said anything.

Fast forward to this week, their fifth wedding anniversary.

The pair have two toddlers – Ted, 3, and Jack (‘a wonderful surprise’), 2.

“Julia Morris came on the show not long ago and said trying to bring up two kids under two is like running a daycare centre with your ex,” Wippa says wryly.

“God, if you go into it without the teamwork, you’re in all sorts of trouble.”

Between the games and holidays and outdoor adventures, there’s stress, bickering, and straight-out exhaustion. But while the whole thing might be both physically and mentally gruelling – especially when you throw in a breakfast radio shift and a whole other business to take care of – it also sounds kind of great.

The Wipflis’ approach to parenting, inspired by a bit of advice from their midwife, is refreshingly simple: “Just take them home, love them and have fun.”

His wife’s sense of humour is what he most loves about her.

“Hell of a lot of fun,” he says. “Her laugh is extremely contagious and we laugh together a lot. [She’s] brilliant.”

After a while in separate beds (because if anyone tries to tell you snoring, 4am starts and sleepless babies are good ingredients for relationships and/or mental health, they’re probably lying), Wippa and Lisa are back in the same room.

“Now that we’ve got a bit more of a routine, it’s good to get into bed at night. Good to have a bit of a conversation,” he says.

“The normal things are still special these days."

“Lisa will be running around after the kids; one of them will be dressed as Batman with a mask on, but slightly off so he’ll continue to run into things; the other one will be pretending to be a Mustang, because for some reason we’re obsessed with Mustangs; Lisa will be commentating in the kitchen about how the Mustang is chasing Batman, then Batman goes down because he can’t see with his mask on and then all of a sudden the Mustang spins out of control…”

“All that ridiculousness that comes with a couple of kids and the fun in the kitchen – I do enjoy the madness of it.”
