Unearthed diary reveals life of a '50s housewife: 'Didn't do anything but eat all day'

"Winnie wanted me to come for dinner... I didn't feel like going."

While these could easily be mistaken for 2021 WhatsApp messages between friends, they're taken from an unearthed diary belonging to a 1950s housewife.

A TikTok user, posting under the handle @OtherWorldDesign, discovered the 1957 diary in an op shop earlier this month.

Examining the content of the notebook, which included entries for every day of the year in impeccable handwriting, they believe it likely belonged to a housewife.

They've since discovered the woman's name is Nellie — and now, to the delight of almost 200,000 followers, they've been sharing pages from the diary on the platform,

Tne entries provide a unique insight into life 64 years ago, and spoiler alert: it wasn't always thrilling.

In fact, the first entry we're treated to sees our heroine declare she "didn't do anything but eat all day". (Yup, been there.)

Elsewhere, Nellie recalls deciding to "catch flies for the lizard" to while away the others; another day, it's getting rid of "a lot of trash" and getting Christmas cards sorted that keeps her occupied.

A woman called Winnie also scores a few mentions. In one entry Nellie admits she doesn't feel like accepting Winnie's dinner invitation; in others, she mentions phone calls they've had.

Our housewife also writes about making slippers and doing "a little patching".

Viewers are loving the virtual time machine so much, they've begun requesting specific dates for @OtherWorldDesign to reveal the entries for.
