A Canadian's search for answers about the purpose of a unique crystal dish has captivated the internet with more than 8 million views on TikTok in just two days.

The woman, who goes by the name Mrs Needful, posted a video of the mystery object asking for help to identify it.

"Currently working at the thrift store and nobody knows what this is. So if someone can tell us what it is – there's two but we don't know. Why would there be a thing right there in the middle," she said referencing a small divider in the dish.

Of course TikTok users were only too happy to help, but not before offering a few funny suggestions.

"Crystal taco stand, duh," one joked.

"it's my thingymebob I was wondering where it got to," another said.

"It's a fantasy dentures holder," commented a TikToker.

Other guesses ranged from a corn cob holder that allows you to butter the vegetable more easily to a juicer and a napkin holder.

However, eventually the comments section revealed the actual name of the item, which is priced at $2, is known as a princess knife holder.

"Silverware holders for a buffet table. I have 3. One for knives, forks and spoons," a viewer commented.

"A crystal knife holder by Princess House. It can be used when setting a formal table. It is for the placement of used knife instead of on the plate," one wrote.

"Knew instantly. My [mother in law] has several. She has this knife holder as well as one for spoons and forks. Handy for parties.," another said.

In a separate video Mrs Needful responded to the comments saying she "never would have figured that out" and added that she thinks the cutlery holders are "a bit boujee".

"I really liked everybody's ideas and as for not doing a Google image search, I don't know how to do that and this is more fun so why not?" she said.

One is a set of four utensils that look like long-handled spoons with gaps in the top. Currently the most common suggestions are corn cob butterer and absinthe preparer.

While that mystery continues, Mrs Needful posted a third video of a plastic bowl with a smaller section in the middle, which some have suggested is a drink dispenser stand.
