Three furniture hacks that will transform your cluttered living room and entryway
When most of us go shopping for furniture, we tend to look at the options designed for that specific purpose, but some shoppers have found a creative way to get the exact style and size they want using other products.
Recently, we’ve heard of people placing multiple side tables side by side to create a TV unit, and at the launch of Kmart’s new August living range we spotted three more ways multiple pieces of furniture are being used to make bigger and more versatile items.

“We’re seeing like people using things like an entertainment unit, which was traditionally only thought about for a TV, being utilised as low-line storage now and putting things like books, records, record players, using it as a top and just for where they want a low height versus a high height. It’s not just about the TV,” Nicholas Holmes, Kmart furniture buyer told nine.com.au at the August living launch event in Sydney.
“The flexibility with people being able to, in tighter spaces they still can buy into the ranges and make it their own. We still do the really larger pieces for that customer [that wants it], let’s say, where we used to be kind of capped out at a certain size.”
The first of these hacks to catch our attention was eight of the $22 walnut-look four-cube display storage units placed beside and on top of each other to make a longer and taller display shelving unit. This could be used for books, decor and mementoes if in the living room or bags and shoe storage in an entryway.

You could also do this with the white or oak four-cube units, or the $49 Ikea Kallax 77cmx77cm unit, the $35 Openook four-cube shelf storage unit from Big W or the $49 flexi storage 2x2 clever cube unit from Bunnings.
The second hack we saw, and perhaps our favourite, was three of the ripple three-drawer chest in walnut placed side by side to create a long sideboard. It’s perfect for living rooms and entryways because you have space to decorate and display your treasures, and nine drawers worth of storage.
This can be done with any chest of drawers, but other designs with the curve look are the $299 Colby scalloped chest of drawers from Luxo Living, the $469.99 Malena six-drawer unit from Mocka, the $399 Maisie three drawer chest from Early Settler Furniture.

The third hack we were inspired by was three of the $75 Willow tall cabinets with shelves placed side by side. This creates a tall display and storage unit that can be used in any room, including the living room, dining room and entryway.
Other options for this hack include the $199.99 Levede tall bathroom cabinet storage 166cm tallboy cupboard adjustable shelf and the $85.95 Costway 145cm bathroom cabinet five-tier wood storage organiser with two drawers and open shelf white.
