The secret storage space you probably didn't know was hiding under your oven

Every inch of space matters when you're trying to turn a cluttered area into a functional and organised room.

But there is one spot you might not have realised you could be utilising for storage in your kitchen, according to professional organiser Anita Birges.

While organising a client's kitchen she came across a special feature that many people don't even realise is there until told about it.

"It's a secret drawer in your kitchen that many homes have and it's just underneath the oven. Some people have it as a 'warming drawer' and some have it there as a storage drawer," she captioned an Instagram reel.

Birges' said that her favourite way to use this extra space is for organising things like baking trays, which we all know can be hard to store in a cupboard given their size and shape.

She encouraged her followers to "stop whatever you're doing" and head to their kitchens to see if they have this handy secret drawer too.

Some followers were pleasantly suprised to find they did have one, and those who knew about it already shared their favourite way to use the drawer.

"OMG I literally just checked and it's there! I've been here for almost two years now!" one commented.

"You have just blown my mind. I built my home. Picked the oven. Been here 5 years. It has a drawer. What else don't I know about?!" a woman said.

"Our 2 year old found it and used it as step. So good to put those never used big trays in. Our old oven we found the telescopic rails and a rotisserie bar in the secret drawer when we pulled it out never knew it was there," a mum posted.

"I put my recipes in there," another said.

Sadly, not all kitchens have the secret drawer leaving some people a little disappointed.

"I got so excited for the possibility of extra storage but mine doesn't have one," a woman said.

"I just attempted to pull the 'drawer' out. I nearly too the whole cover off. No drawer for me… but it is now slightly dipped," commented a follower.

"I have no secret tray… I saw this and got excited and raced over to my oven," another wrote.

According to Tasting Table, the exact function of the drawer under an oven can be identified by the features it has.

If it's a warming drawer, it's likely you have an electric oven and there will be some sort of knob or function that allows you to adjust the temperature of the drawer to keep food warm until you need to serve to guests.

"Keep in mind it's for warming foods that are already hot. Its purpose is to keep food at a temperature that is conducive to serving, much like a warming lamp in a professional kitchen. The drawer is most likely not best for reheating and definitely not for cooking," read Tasting Table's explainer on the oven drawer.

However, if the drawer is meant for storage it won't have any racks, broiling pan or be attached to the control panel.

Tasting Table advised being careful with what you choose to store in that drawer given it is under the oven, so plastics are probably best kept elsewhere.
