The $7 quick fix that solved an age-old rug dilemma

It's perhaps the oldest gripe in the book where rug ownership is concerned; the matter of incessant slippage.

This constant struggle when combining hardwood floors and soft furnishings – and the ensuing flipping, tugging and readjusting – is enough to drive anyone up the wall.

But as it turns out, preventing your rug slip-sliding left, right and centre on the surface of your floor is as simple as a quick nip to your local supermarket.

While more conventional methods call for a non-slip underlay placed beneath the offending rug, the no-frills, budget-friendly alternative is equally effective – with but a fraction of the cost or heavy-lifting required.

Daunted at the prospect of hoisting hefty bedroom furniture to remove, then re-place the offending rug overtop an underlay, I scrambled for a simpler alternative to this more traditional, taxing technique.

And thankfully, I found it. Though certainly a low-effort option, the method proved a roaring success – and since trying it out, I've vowed never to go back.

With one dot applied to the hardwood floor, and the second corresponding dot applied to the back of my rug, they met in the middle and became an easily-removable solution to slippage.

Instantly gone were the days of adjusting bunching or dog-eared corners. From that point on, my rug – and my sanity – stayed put.

My one concern when applying these dots was whether the sticky adhesive would leave residue on my hardwood, but these fears were quickly dispelled.

Upon removing one dot as a test, there was no such residue to be found, with my floors remaining blessedly non-stick.

The dots in question can be purchased at any number of stores, at a price point ranging from $3 (Spotlight) to $7 (Coles/Officeworks).

And while the primary appeal of the Velcro dots lies in their easily adjustable nature, there is one similar Kmart alternative that yields an equally effective result.

The $5 rug grip tape on offer fits securely to the underside of rugs and mats – however this particular product is not for permanent use and must be changed ever 30 days to avoid damage to flooring, per the Kmart website.

The tape also leaves residue, which Kmart advises using commercially available glue or adhesive remover to clean.
