10. Warm minimalism

Minimalism as a design concept brings to mind lots of white with some black and only the bare necessities.

If that thought leaves you a little cold but you do like the idea of not having a lot of things in your bedroom then warm minimalism might be for you.

Warm minimalism is all about neutral colours including white, beige and brown, soft textures such as linen and natural materials like wood.

Of course, being minimalist, this look means just the furniture and furnishings you need with just a few décor pieces to create the look and feel of a calming space.

This design trend is all about choosing colours of wood with warm tones like mahogany.

What you're looking for is a red, pink or orange look to the wood and the timber can be either dark or light.

To style it in the room, look for décor, paint and furnishings in similar tones and neutral shades like in the room above for a complete warm timber vibe.

Instead of the standard materials you see in bedding and curtains, look for something a little bit different.

Velvet will create a luxurious look, while an embroidered fabric makes a space feel nostalgic and considered.

Wall details like wainscotting and picture rails have been making a comeback in homes with people looking to add depth and interest to plain painted walls, so it's no surprise to see they've made the top 10 bedroom trend list.

These details can be added to all four walls or just one for a feature.

While you can call a professional in for them, they are easily done yourself with timber mouldings pieces available at hardware stores.

6. Personal touches

It often feels like rooms need to look a certain way or follow a style to a tee, but there is no rule that says your home needs to look anything other than how you like it.

This is where personal touches come in and probably why they're the sixth most popular design trend in bedding.

Personal touches in a space can be whatever you want them to be.

If you love indoor plants and want your bedroom to feel like a rainforest, then, like the image above, add as many plants as you please.

Personal touches can also be photos, souvenirs from travelling, floral motifs or even just full of your favourite colour.

You can go as little or as big with personal touches as you want because it's, well, personal.

Experts say our beds should just be for sleeping, which means we need another cosy place to curl up with a good book before we nod off.

That makes reading nooks a brilliant idea and very popular to add to bedrooms.

Reading nooks require a seat or something comfy to sit on, some lighting, a throw and of course, your latest read.

Nooks are often added to corners or slightly enclosed spaces, but if you don't have any of those a good armchair or beanbag will do.

For stunning patterns there's nothing like wallpaper to make over a room without all the time and effort of painting.

Wallpaper can be used on all walls, just one wall or part of a wall.

Being a bedroom you might want to look for a wallpaper that has a calming effect so that you don't feel too stimulated to sleep.

Draped curtains make a luxurious style statement but they're also practical too.

Heavier curtains, particularly blockout styles, will help keep the room warm in winter and cool in summer.

Plus the addition of curtains helps provide privacy, especially if your windows don't have blinds.

2. Cosy colours

A cosy space is also a relaxing one and colours are the most important factor for creating that feel.

Greens and blues on the walls, furniture, décor and/or soft furnishings can all help to achieve that sanctuary-like atmosphere.

"Choose room colours that evoke a calmness in you; think of colours you see in nature, subtle colours of blues and greens. Bright colours can make the room feel busy and alive which is not what you want when falling asleep," Hannah Shore, head of sleep science, said.

"Of course there is some psychology behind this, but colours won't necessarily affect everyone, so if you have a bright yellow bedroom and are sleeping fine then that is great, you don't have to go and change everything.

"Different things evoke calmness in different people, too. My calm place is nature, so I try to bring that into the bedroom to help me sleep. Think of a place that evokes calmness in you, the colours associated with that place and try to bring those into your bedroom decor."
