Pantries always look amazing after a deep clean but they can very quickly go back to being untidy and chaotic.

The trick to keeping the pantry fresh in between the more thorough clean-outs is to stay on top of the little problems as they arise.

Sticky stains on shelves

These can be really annoying to find in the pantry, especially when you've only just got the shelves spotless.

Leaks from honey bottles and sauces aren't easily removed with a cloth and water so you'll need something more heavy duty.

"All you need is a Magic Eraser and it's going to work its magic," Birges said.

Surface spray

If you really want to maintain a clean pantry, you're going to have to wipe your shelves and door from time-to-time.

Instead of reaching for the store bought stuff, Birges has a DIY spray you can use which will work just as effectively and is super affordable.

"All you're going to need is one cup of water, one cup of vinegar and 15 drops of peppermint oil," she said.

Then all you need to do is spray and wipe.

Peppermint adhesive

This is Birges' favourite hack and one you'll love too because it will ensure that fresh smell lingers long after your deep clean.

And the best part is it deters one of the most-hated pests from getting stuck into your food.

"Grab yourself one of those felt adhesive pads, put on a couple of drops of peppermint oil and stick it underneath the shelf. It not only keeps your pantry smelling fresh but keeps those pesky pantry moths away," Birges explained.
